Message of Robert Aymar, CERN DIrector General, to the CERN Council, on September 25th, 2008.

Dear Council Delegates,

I would like to thank you for your reactions to my suggestion to maintain the LHC Inauguration Ceremony on October 21 2008, as initially foreseen: they have not only been positive, they have also been very supportive.

I am happy to add that the CERN staff has reacted to the incident very professionally and with impressive determination to recover Sector 34 as soon as possible. The reaction of the large LHC user community is perhaps best illustrated by referring to yesterday's open session of the meeting of the LHC Committee, a peer review committee that reports to me. After a presentation to a fully packed main auditorium, in which the incident and the way forward were explained by the project leader, Lyn Evans, a spontaneous and loud applause underlined the support for and confidence in the LHC project.

I am sure that this spirit will prevail during the inauguration ceremony which will take place as planned on October 21, 2008.

Best regards

Robert Aymar
