LHC 2008 - Open Day CERN personnel

Kick-off event

This special Open Day reserved for members of the CERN personnel will start at 9:00 in the partner communes around the ring followed by the inauguration of the various tour routes.

A CERN delegation will take the opportunity to offer the mayors a unique present to thank them for their invaluable cooperation: a 60 cm diameter section of a dipole magnet weighing almost 10 kg. The choice of present is no coincidence. It is highly symbolic since the dipoles are at the very heart of the LHC project. Each section is a faithful replica of a slice of one of the 1232 LHC dipole magnets which will be used to guide the particles around the ring. The dipoles alone occupy almost 18 km of the 27 km LHC tunnel. They are composed of superconducting cables, consisting of niobium-titanium strands with a coating of copper, which will take the current to 12’000 amps.

These pieces of the LHC will be unveiled in a public area in 11 communes around the ring in the presence of an official delegation by CERN. Please see the table below for a list of the locations for this ceremony.

Programme

At 9:30 the visits of the LHC tunnel and experiments around the ring will be officially inaugurated by a CERN delegation together with the mayors and deputy mayors of each commune. Members of CERN personnel living in the communes are welcome to these unveiling ceremonies.

From 10:00 to 16:00 members of the CERN personnel and their families will then have the unique opportunity to go down into the tunnel and the detector caverns at the LHC points. In addition, most of the surface events planned for the public Open Day on 6 April will also be open. For more details on these, please see the list below with links for further information.

WARNING: Please note that there will be no shuttle service on the 5th of April.

LHC P1, Meyrin: Two separate visits: to the LHC tunnel and  to the ATLAS cavern ; Events in the Globe. (Please note that there will be no "Globe Show" on the 5th.)

LHC P2, St. Genis-Pouilly, Sergy: Combined visit to the LHC tunnel and  the ALICE cavern. You will listen to a symphonie of cosmic rays with a special “cosmophone”.

LHC P3, Crozet: Visit to the LHC tunnel (by invitation only); "Show Physics".

LHC P4, Echenevex: Visit to the tunnel; exhibition about acceleration; animations and exhibition on synchrotron light by ESRF Grenoble; "Show Physics".

LHC P5, Cessy: Two separate visits: to the LHC tunnel, and the CMS detector.

LHC P6, Versonnex, Collex-Bossy: Visit to the LHC tunnel; beam dump game and "Magicien, Physicienne" animation for children; animations and presentations on radiation protection and environmental impact; Fire Brigade exhibition.

LHC P7, Ferney-Voltaire, Ornex: Offical visit to the LHC tunnel from 9:30 to 10:30.

LHC P8, Ferney-Voltaire: Two separate visits: to the LHC tunnel, and the LHCb detector cavern; "Show Physics"; starting point to visit CAST, the first LHC magnet now used as a telescope.

CERN Site Prevessin: The Accelerator Chain: CCC and COMPASS (starting 12:00 pm); visit of AMS; special LHC building (927).

CERN Site Meyrin: The large, cross-border CERN site opens its doors for you: demonstrations on supraconductivity, a tour to follow the LHC magnets, a special medical applications tour (TERA-ESI, Crystals Detectors and Medipix), visits to the pre-accelerators and CLIC, visit to the Computer Centre and GridCafe; "Show Physics" in the Globe, animations, and many other surprises.

Please note that movies about CERN will be shown in four languages on the CERN Meyrin site (in B40, B33, the Main Auditorium and the Council Chamber) continuously during the whole day. (Please note that there will be no lecture programme on the 5th.)

The day will close at 16:00 followed by a special talks in the Globe:

16:30 "LHC: la grande adventure " by Lyn Evans, LHC project leader (in French)

Children's programme

Since access to the tunnel is restricted to children above 10 , special activities (everything but "C'est pas Sorcier") are also planned for our youngest visitors.
