LHC 2008 - Open Day
Echenevex

Point 4: Echenevex

Discover the LHC tunnel and the incredible acceleration capacity of the LHC machine. The LHC will accelerate particles to close to the speed of light. To reach this breath-taking speed, the particles will receive a "kick" from the accelerating cavities INSTALLED IN P 4 ONLY on each lap of the 27-km ring. In one second, they will perform 11,000 laps of the ring, thus travelling three-quarters of the distance from the Earth to the Moon.

Programme

LHC tunnel and Acceleration
There will be one guided tour to the LHC tunnel with a focus on the accelerating cavities, starting continuously from the Info Point at the Salle Communale La Chenaille in Echenevex, where you can get your free, numbered ticked.

Please note the safety rules for access to the underground tunnel and caverns.

Salle Communale La Chenaille
In the salle, one of the impressive accelerating cavities of the LHC will be on display, giving you the chance to find out how particles are given such energy, as well as an exhibition about LHC milestones. You can also take a close look at one of the LHC dipole magnets.

Make sure that you do not miss the animations and exhibition on synchrotron light by the ESRF Grenoble. One of CERN's sister institutions, the ESRF also uses storage rings, but to produce light rather than to let particles collide. Synchrotron radiation is used in the LHC for the beam diagnostics, while at the ESRF they use it to study a remarkably wide range of materials. The ESRF team will bring some of themand you'll be able to see fossiles as well as space-made materials, i.e. materials that were produced in weightless conditions. You'll learn how the synchrotron light is used to investigate the properties of such materials.

Show Physics: Circus Naturligvis
The "Circus Naturally" show explains how the physics behind riding a bicycle is the same as the physics responsible for the seasons on Earth, as well as performing other experiments explaining rotation, pressure, temperature, phase transitions and electromagnetism. If you want to see how current travels through people or what you can do with static electricity, come to the "Science Playground" where you can have a go yourself.

Moreover, in Salle la Chenaille you can follow talks about CERN in general and particle acceleration in particular.

At 10:25, Fred from “C'est pas sorcier” will make a stop in Echenevex.
