LHC 2008 - Open Day
St. Genis

Point 2: Saint-Genis-Pouilly, Sergy

Come and discover the LHC tunnel and the wonderland of ALICE, an experiment designed to explore the first moments of the Universe and solve the mysteries surrounding the origin of matter.

Programme

LHC tunnel and ALICE
There will be one guided tour, to the LHC tunnel and the ALICE detector, starting continuously from the Info point at the entrance to the P2,  where you can also get your free, numbered ticket.

Please note the safety rules for access to the underground tunnel and caverns.

On the surface, you can find a new exhibition with a 5m model to discover how the ALICE detector works and you can take a close look at one of the LHC dipole magnets. Physics is fun; this you can experience in several simple experiments, such as how to create a magnetic field or how you can find a particle accelerator in your TV. You can also see a levitation experiment with some superconducting materials and listen to a symphonie of cosmic rays with a special “cosmophone”.

In several stands scientists will show you cutting edge technology that is now employed in the ALICE experiment to identify the thousands of particles produced in each collision.

The ALICE shop and a stand of the French Post office will offer you range of souvenirs to remember your visit to CERN.

Salle Jean Monnet
Please find below a schedule for talks about CERN in general and the ALICE experiment in particular, which will take place in the Salle Jean Monnet in St. Genis. Here you will also find an exhibition about the ALICE experiment.

At 8:50, Fred from “C'est pas sorcier” will make a stop in St. Genis.
